Description
City Carillonneur of Rotterdam Richard de Waardt & Syrian musician Nawras Altaky bring together the ud & the carillon for the first time in history. The ud is a typical instrument of the Middle East with a long and rich history, going back for over 5000 years. The carillon is a typical instrument from the Low Countries (Holland & Belgium). The carillon of the Laurenskerk in Rotterdam was made in 1660 by François Hemony and has been playing ever since.
The recording starts with an improvisation and develops in "Ya Ana Ya Ana", a song by the great Libanese singer Fairuz. She used Mozart's theme of his 40th symphony as an inspiration. East meets west, in multiple layers! Enjoy.
